Navigator Program Introduced to Support Evacuees
The County of Annapolis, in partnership with the Province of Nova Scotia, has launched the Navigator Program to support residents affected by the West Dalhousie wildfires.
This 12-month initiative is designed to help evacuees—particularly those who lost their homes—navigate the complex processes of recovery, including accessing funding, completing insurance claims, and connecting with essential resources.
Jonathan Gillis has been hired by the County as the program’s first Navigator Coordinator. A lifelong resident and current President of the West Dalhousie Community Hall, Jonathan is deeply rooted in the area and brings local knowledge and trust to the role.
“I’m truly honoured to stand with my community during this difficult time,” said Jonathan. “West Dalhousie is where my heart is, and I’m dedicated to helping my friends and neighbours rebuild and make sure everyone has access to the support they need.”
The coordinator is employed by the municipality with the salary being claimed through the Disaster Funding Assistance Arrangement (DFAA).
“Recovery is not just about rebuilding structures; it’s about restoring confidence, connection, and a sense of home,” said Warden Diane Le Blanc. “Having someone like Jonathan—someone from the community who truly understands the people and the challenges they face—is essential. His role as Navigator Coordinator will help ensure that no one feels alone as they move through this recovery journey.”
The Navigator Program operates daily, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Bridgetown Fire Hall (31 Bay Rd.). Evacuees can contact the program by phone at (902) 955-9858 or email at navigator@annapoliscounty.ca.
